Adventuring Faithfully: Spooky Season Series

Are you a spooky lover that wants to have a fun experience for Halloween? New Orleans (NOLA) is your go to destination in the United States to do so. The history, architecture, cemeteries, Voo Doo, and overall atmosphere make it the perfect destination for exploring the city full of folklore for a Halloween adventure. Here I will share tips, tricks and some of my favorite spooky must see places.

While I advocate for solo travel, I think this is a trip to bring a buddy on to share in the adventure. With planning this adventure I recommend picking a few must see places and activities. The ones I would recommend would be a ghost tour, French Quarter, a cemetery, and one to die for a meal. In only planning a few staples this allows for you to pop into all the fun shops, cafes, and bars that catch your eye along the way, or maybe some spooky spirit draws you in.

While violent crime is dropping in NOLA, it is still a city with a very active night life, and tourism. For those that carry a bag, do what you can to wear cross body bags, not carrying around a shoulder strap purse, this will prevent any bag snatching. For those who only carry a wallet and phone, keep things in your front pockets, and limit the amount of cash you carry. I highly recommend getting reusable drink covers, drink spiking is somewhat common, and you want to make sure you aren’t getting anything slipped into your drinks, I carry a NightCap on me regularly! Here is a place I would also stay in a hotel, my best recommendation is Hotel Mazarin, it was quaint, clean and a block from the heart of Bourbon Street. It prevents you from an Air BnB (with multiple entrances), and keeps you from walking in dark alleys. This protects from crime… or the lore of the vampires.

While Bourbon Street in the French Quarter is wonderful and lively, I encourage you to branch out to the Garden District, Frenchmen, and Mid-city. In Mid-city you can enjoy an iced latte in historic cemeteries, for a spooktacular Halloween pick me up. Enjoy the botanical gardens outside of the Garden District, and listen to live music on Frenchmen without the crowds of Bourbon.

For me the best spooky season experiences would be a day planned out like this: a latte at Sacred Grinds, lunch and cocktails at the Vampire Apothecary after visiting the Storyville Museum, join a ghost tour to learn the haunts of the city, meet the ghost Pierre, while having one of the best steaks at Muriel’s, and if you’re brave enough ending the night with a Purple Drank at Laffitte’s, with the ghost of John Laffitte himself.
