I have been blessed enough to travel across the world, crossing bucket list destinations off my list, and adding new ones. I’ve tried new foods, experienced new cultures, got lost in the city, and explored the South African bush, yet one place that I will always go back to and see as the most beautiful destination is my hometown, Lake Almanor. I am lucky enough that my parents still live there, and I can return for a mini getaway whenever I need it. Whether you are looking for a relaxing weekend, an outdoor adventure, or a change of scenery, sometimes the best destinations are closer than you think.
Lake Almanor will provide you with that small town feel, but the benefits of fresh air, gorgeous scenery, the lake, mountains, a National Park nearby, and a slower pace. If you have never been, it is a must see destination if you are in need of a reset on life. I drastically miss the slower mornings, no mid-day traffic, and random adventures that come from the area.

If I was visiting for the first time, or returning, I would arrive on Friday. There are a ton of wonderful Air BnB’s that would get you close to the lake, gorgeous camp grounds, or my two recommendations in town: The Bidwell House, or Timber House Lodge. On the way to the lake stop in Westwood, and pick up the best pizza you will have at Buffalo Chips. I highly recommend the hot Italian, and add artichoke hearts. Then get to your room, unpack, go for a quick scenic drive, and leave work at home.
Saturday morning, start out with a coffee from the Coffee Station in town. I recommend a blended Kona Mocha, and spend what time you can outside. There is something to do in every season, whether fishing, golfing, boating, biking, hiking, or paddleboarding. Enjoy the fresh air while you can, and enjoy another local dinner. If you continue to follow along, I will break down all the amazing activities in the area seasonally!
Sunday, enjoy the last slow morning you have. Make your way into town and enjoy a delicious breakfast, and my favorite iced latte at Cravings. Enjoy the little shops the town has to offer, and enjoy one last mini-outdoor adventure before you make your way back home. But remember, there is no need to over plan, enjoy the experience and make room to be spontaneous.
My favorite part about visiting home is the comfort of my favorite meals, the fresh air, and escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. Every season brings so much joy and peace at Lake Almanor, fall will always be my favorite time of the year, but it is never not beautiful. From the sun shining on the lake in the summer, to the snow on Mt. Lassen in the winter. There is always something to be amazed by.
That said, there is something to be said about a small town adventure, and preparation is key. Taxis and rideshare do not exist. If you are planning on visiting a local bar, make sure it’s walking distance from your hotel or that you have a designated driver. Driving can even be difficult, make sure you are prepared for weather conditions, and always watch for deer… they have a tendency to run into vehicles. Dress for the season, and bring extra layers, even in the summer it is not uncommon to need a sweatshirt. If you are going to be participating in outdoor activities, service may not be available. While most of our phones now have satellite messaging an SOS messaging system is not a bad idea to carry with you.
Travel has taken me to some amazing places, and I don’t plan on stopping, but sometimes the best places are home. Whether it’s your hometown, a mountain town nearby, or a new city, take it in as a traveler. Book the trip, make a weekend out of it, slow down and enjoy what is nearby.
